Coach Young here with your St Joseph Freestylin’ Irish swim team update. We had a great showing at the final meet of the year on Saturday, February 2nd: The Region IV Championships. Everyone pushed themselves and everyone who swam cut their times. Coach Blatt and I are so proud of how well the team has done this season.
But, the highlight of the meet was that we had 3 swimmers qualify for the state meet in Morgantown in their individual events. Even more exciting, after working hard the last 2 seasons, we have a relay team that has qualified for the state meet as well!!
Senior Bojena G. qualified for the state meet in both her individual events : The 200 individual medley (IM) and the 100 breaststroke.
Not to be outdone, junior Olivia Y. also qualified in the 200 IM and the 100 backstroke.
After working hard the last 3 seasons, Campbell G. has qualified to swim in the state meet in the 100 breaststroke.
Perhaps the biggest moment of the day came in the first event, when the women’s 200 medley relay team, swimming through the thunderous cheers of the screaming capacity crowd at The Henderson Center at MU, swam a full 6 seconds faster than their fastest time this season, capturing 4th in the event and turning in the 10th fastest medley relay in the state that day to qualify a women’s relay team for the first time in years. Congratulations to Lula A (backstroke), Bojena G (breaststroke), Olivia Y (butterfly) and Tima A (freestyle).
Of course, Coach Blatt and I could not be more pleased to take these great swimmers to WVU Aquatic center to represent St Joseph Central Catholic High School at the WV State Swim Meet February 14th and 15th.
