The WVSSAC requires a new Athletic Participation/Parental Consent/Physician’s Certificate Form for each school year, on or after June 1st.
Athletes are NOT ALLOWED to participate in any summer practices or begin a sport without a current form on file.

Boys Soccer has a storied tradition at St. Joe! They have been to 6 state finals with the last being in 1997. They earned a State Title in 1989. The team has had two WV Gatorade Player of the Year Recipients: Clark Haptonstall (1986) and James Hall (1989).
We welcome all new and experienced soccer players!
Head Coach: Nick Turner
Mr. Turner is a beloved 3rd grade teacher at St. Joseph Catholic School. A native of West Virginia, Nick was a high school standout player at St. Joseph Central Catholic High School from 2008-2011, receiving all-state honors in both his junior and senior years. In addition to high school, he played select soccer for WV Rowdies, EKFC, and WVSC. Turner continued his playing career at the collegiate level as a scholarship player at Bethany College. In his four-year tenure, Nick was Captain his senior year and achieved Academic All-American honors during his junior and senior years. On the coaching side, Coach Turner is a USSF certified licensed coach and has achieved a high-level amount of success on the club and high school levels.
Nick was the Head Girls’ Soccer Coach at St. Joseph Catholic High School from 2015-2018 and had one of the best teams in the state during that time. Since he had been on staff, the team had a 62-23-2 record, finished Top 5 in the state from 2016-2018, and had eight players go on to play college soccer. Nick was an assistant coach for Johnson Central High School Men’s Soccer in Paintsville, KY in 2019, and is currently the Head Boys Coach of St. Joseph Catholic High School. On the club side, Nick coached XFC with two boys high school clubs from 2017-2019 and also has experience training and coaching in a small group private environment. This will be Nick’s second season coaching St. Joe Men’s soccer.
SJHS has a cross-country team for both boys and girls. Both new and experienced runners are welcome to join the team!
Over the years, SJHS has had several runners qualify for the state meet. In 2016, McKenzie M. won the class A/AA individual state title.
Head Coach: Dustin Hatfield
Dustin is a dedicated and seasoned football coach who brings over 17 years of invaluable experience to our football program. His coaching career spans both youth and high school levels, where he has consistently demonstrated a profound commitment to fostering excellence, community involvement, and teamwork. As he joins our team, we are thrilled to leverage his extensive expertise and leadership skills to elevate our athletes both on and off the field. Dustin is also dedicated to his family, fiancé Andrea, children Madyson, Ariana, Micah, Madison, and Gabriel, as well as his friends and co-workers.
Career Highlights and Notable Accomplishments:
- Hurricane High School (2015-2020,2021-2022): As the Varsity Football Coach, Dustin helped the team to the state playoffs every year during his tenure, emphasizing player development, team cohesion, discipline, and sportsmanship. Additionally, he contributed to the Hurricane Youth Football Program (2012-2017), mentoring young athletes and instilling core values such as hard work, dedication, and respect for the game.
- Ona-Milton Youth Football (2008-2010): Coached youth players in foundational football skills and strategies, fostering a love for the game and promoting teamwork and camaraderie.
- WV Spartans Travel Team (2016-2020): As a coach for this elite travel team, Dustin trained youth athletes in advanced techniques and game strategies, preparing them for competitive tournaments and showcases. His role included organizing fundraising and event coordination for travel tournaments.
- Selected as a Diamond All-American Coach (2019-2021) for the High School Freshman All-American team.
- Led teams to two state championships in the 10u and 12u categories.
- Secured the 2017 Tri-State Championship Hurricane Youth Football.
SJHS Golf
SJHS welcomes both new and experienced golfers to join our golf team!
Over the years, several teams and individuals have qualified for the state tournament, with several players receiving all-state honors.
Coach: Jason Haywood
Hello Irish! My Name is Jason Haywood, and I cannot wait to start coaching St. Joe’s Golf team! I played Varsity Golf all four years at Rock Hill High School and helped our golf team reach regionals for the first time in Rock Hill Golf History. Since graduating high school, I’ve attended Marshall University and obtained my bachelor’s degree in social studies education. I’ve also played in amateur golf tournaments occasionally and have spent time with a few golf coaches at these events. I hope to grow the sport at St. Joe and would love to coach and teach students who would love to golf!

Winter Sports
St. Joseph Central Catholic High School offers students the sport of swimming as a winter sport. The team primarily practices at Marshall University’s Rec Center and the Cam Henderson Center. Additional training sessions are offered throughout the season. The season runs from October through to mid-February, with the conclusion of the state swim meet. Swim meets take place throughout the season in the evenings or on the weekends at various aquatic centers located within West Virginia. The St. Joseph Swim Team is coached by Sarah Blatt and the school’s principal, Dr. Templeton. As an avid swimmer herself, Dr. Templeton brings a lifetime experience of competitive swimming, representing Great Britain in swimming, running, and competing at both national and international levels in triathlons for the GB team.
Coach Huff
Jessica Kern Huff is a wife, mother, coach, motivational speaker, and philanthropist from Milwaukee, WI. She aims to educate and empower the other two to follow their dreams. She established the Jessica Kern Foundation and travels the country speaking to teams, schools, and organizations about achieving greatness through infrastructure management, positive reinforcement, and the facilitation of promoting organic growth. She is a champion athlete committed to helping teams and organizations achieve greatness through infrastructure management, positive reinforcement, and the facilitation of promoting organic growth.
She has navigated an unconventional upbringing and a likewise unconventional sports path to create a culture of positive womanhood, women’s empowerment, and dynamic leadership that women can embrace to support each other.
Coach Jessica Huff graduated from Penn State University with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Journalism. At Penn State, Jessica was a student-athlete in the track and field program, where she earned many accolades, including All-Big Ten selection, team captain, All-Academic Big Ten selection, Dean’s List recipient, and Student-Athlete Advisory Board member. From 2003-2010, Huff played professional basketball overseas in the Federation of International Basketball.
Upon graduation, Huff served as a leader for young women by starting her coaching career as an assistant at The University of Arkansas, Pine Bluff, and The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. In 2016, Coach Huff was named the head basketball coach at Mississippi State University. Later, she was named the head coach at Tennessee State in 2017. In 2020, Coach Huff stepped down to focus on her family and community.
Coach Hammond
Coach Hammond is a graduate of Marshall University with a Bachelor’s Degree in Biology and Chemistry. As a student, Coach Hammond also played Division I for Marshall University from 2005-2010 and was named to the Conference USA all-freshman team. Since graduating from Marshall, Coach Hammond’s passion for the sport has continued through private instruction and coaching sessions along with experience coaching for St. Joseph Catholic School’s girls’ basketball team in 2019-2020.
US Foods currently employs coach Hammond as a territory manager, enabling Coach Hammond the flexibility and opportunity to return to her passion on the basketball court. As a member of the Marshall Alumni Board, Coach Hammond is proud to be able to give back to the community that has helped her flourish as a student-athlete. Coach Hammond resides in Huntington with her three beautiful rescue dogs, Penny, Pax, and Pilot.
The girls’ basketball team at St. Joseph Central Catholic High School welcomes all students who are interested in playing basketball.
The team has won 9 state championships, with 2019 being the most recent title. The team has had numerous All-State players and McDonald’s All-American nominees. The team has had two players receive Gatorade Player of the Year Honors. Mychal Johnson won it twice (2012-13, 2013-14), and Grace Hutson (2019-20).

St. Joseph Central Catholic High School is excited to welcome Coach Todd Maynard, a Spring Valley native, as Head Basketball Coach for the upcoming 2021-2022 basketball season. Coach Maynard brings extensive years of experience, an unprecedented work ethic, and professional expertise in the field of basketball, leadership, and business education. As a keen basketball player himself representing Kentucky Christian University, Coach Maynard took his team to the NAIA final four in 2007-2008.
Today, Coach Maynard continues to focus and apply his energy, passion, and expertise not only on the basketball court but also in the classroom. As a highly qualified business education teacher, teaching business education at Tolsia High School for the past four years, Coach Maynard has recently accepted a new position teaching business at Huntington High School. In addition to his new teaching position, Coach Maynard has been recognized for building a highly successful basketball program at Tolsia High School over the past four years. As Head Coach at Tolsia, Coach Maynard’s basketball team accomplished a win at the sectional championship and was recognized as a regional runner-up. Coach Maynard’s basketball team has also been ranked among the top five teams in the state for the past four years. Coach Maynard holds a Bachelor’s Degree from Kentucky Christian University Studies in Biblical Studies and Business Management. In addition to this, Coach Maynard has a Master’s Degree in Executive Leadership from Liberty University, VA.
